Getting an Indian Visa in Shanghai Part I

By Bryan • china, shanghai, travel • 5 Jul 2009

I titled this part I because I am fairly certain that there are going to be subsequent entries.  Shades of gray from last years Russian visa experience.

My morning email transaction.

Hello,

I’m a Canadian passport holder with a Chinese F-Category visa.  I would like to know if I qualify to apply for  an Indian Tourist visa in Shanghai.

Thank you – your response is appreciated.

Hello

At first , I want to know if you have got the residence permit  issued by jiangsu, zhejiang or shanghai? I tell you an website www.vfs-india.com.cn  which you can know all the application details , if you still have some confusions, please feel free to contact us.

Hello,

Thank you for your quick response!

I have visited your website but I am still not clear. *i would have had to visit it to get your email*  I have and F-Category visa (business visa) which is valid for 6 months.  It is not a Z-Category (working), it’s not an X-Category (student) and it is not a L-Category (Tourist).

I don’t think an F-Category Chinese visa includes a residence permit.  The F-Category visa is issued to foreigners staying for periods of up to 6 months, for business, conference and sport related activities.

I just need to know if you accept an F-Category visa for applying for a Indian tourist visa.

Thank you,

Hello

I just want to confirm  If you have the residence permit  on your passport, because our centre just accept the documents from jiangsu, zhejiang province or shanghai. if you haven’t , it has nothing to do with your india visa application actually . but   if you work in jiangsu, zhejiang  or shanghai, that is fine, you can apply for the tourist visa in our centre and you can prepare for your application documents according to the website

Hello,

Like I said, I quite certain that an F-Category does not have a residence permit.  I am living in Shanghai as a visiting master’s student at Fudan University.

Thanks again for the rapid response.  Usually I never hear anything when I send emails about visas!

Hi

Do you have any confusions about the visa? If you have , please contact us.

Hello,

Yes, I’m still quite confused.  I am just looking for a  yes or no answer.  Can I apply for an Indian tourist visa?  I have a Chinese F-Category 6 month Business visa with no residence permit and a Canadian passport.  Yes, or no?

Thank you,

Hello

i have already told you that you  can apply for Indian tourist visa in our centre according to the situation you told me

*ripping hair out*  Where did you tell me?! Where!?  It was mentioned that it was ok if I was ‘working in shanghai” which would mean that I hold a residence permit (those working legally in China will have such a permit).  But I don’t have that permit…

…I ended up waiting in a phone line for 15 minutes to get a hold of a info officer at the company that the Indian consulate farms out visa duties too.

10 seconds.  Of course you can, no problem.

This, of course – could have been written with two letters in the first email.

You should have mentioned the family connection to the Stanley Cup!

Unfortunately the family connection with crickets is with the real kind. I recall crickets in the basement that belonged to a family member who kept lizards (JPC).
Where are you planning to go in India?
